Color Blocking Outfit for Women: How to Combine Colors

Color blocking means combining two to three strong colors as solid blocks: one piece in pink, the next in red, green or blue, with no pattern in between. It works best with two colors that you clearly split between top and bottom.

Color blocking looks bold, but it is easy to do in everyday life. The rules are simple and follow the color wheel. This guide explains them, names matching color pairs, shows how to start with just one piece and has three outfits to copy. For a general overview of colors, see the guide Color combinations in clothing.

What is color blocking?

With color blocking you wear colors as clear, solid blocks next to each other. Each piece of clothing has one color, and the edges of the pieces form the dividing lines. Patterns and gradients are not part of it.

Two related styles are easy to mix up. In a tone-on-tone look you stay within one color family, as described in the guide Monochrome outfit for women. In an accent look you wear one colored piece with calm neutrals. Color blocking, on the other hand, relies on two or three colors that stand side by side as equals.

How do you combine colors in color blocking? The rules

  • Two to three colors. More quickly looks busy. Shoes and bag count too.
  • One color per piece. Striped or patterned pieces take away the effect of the block.
  • Weigh the strength. Two strong colors make a loud picture. One strong and one muted color look calmer.
  • Plan a pause. White, black, beige or denim blue between two colors calms the look.
  • Split it clearly. One color on top, another on the bottom, or a jacket in the second color over a one-color outfit.

Which colors go together? The color wheel logic

The color wheel shows how strong the contrast between two colors is. Three patterns are enough for everyday wear:

  • Complementary. Two colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel: blue and orange, red and green, yellow and purple. This gives the strongest contrast.
  • Analogous. Colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel, such as red, pink and orange or blue, turquoise and green. This gives a softer, more harmonious look.
  • Triad. Three colors at equal distances, for example red, yellow and blue or orange, green and purple. This is the most colorful way and works best when one color appears only in a small amount.

Pink is close to red, coral sits between red and orange, and lilac belongs to the purple family. This is how the rules carry over to clothing.

Color blocking in everyday life: Blue and orange, pink and red, green and pink

Blue and orange. The classic complementary pair. For everyday wear it is easier with coral instead of pure orange and with denim blue or navy. A dress in coral with a blue denim jacket is a simple approach. You can find matching pants in the blue jeans. More about the colors is in the guides Which color goes with orange and Which color goes with blue.

Pink and red. Pink and red sit close together on the color wheel and give a soft but clear contrast. A knit sweater in pink with a red jacket is one example, and light jeans or white in between add calm. More about pink in the guide Which color goes with pink.

Green and pink. Pink and green sit roughly opposite each other on the color wheel. A muted green such as sage takes the sharpness out of strong pink. The relaxed pants in sage with the sweater in pink show how this looks.

Yellow and lilac. Yellow and purple are complementary. In soft shades the pair is easier than in strong ones. A top in yellow under an open blouse in lilac, with white pants, gives two clear blocks with a light pause. You can find yellow pieces in the yellow clothing.

Color blocking for beginners: Start with one accent piece

If you do not want to wear two strong colors right away, start with a single strong piece and keep the rest neutral. Three ways lead there:

  • One piece, one color. A sweater in pink or a jacket in red with white, beige, black or jeans. This is not real color blocking yet, but it is the first step.
  • Keep the second color small. A bag, shoes, a scarf or a belt in the contrasting color is enough.
  • A jacket as the second color. You can take the jacket off if the mix gets too colorful for you.

A colorful cardigan over a simple outfit is a good starting point. If you enjoy strong colors and want more ideas, read the guide Dopamine dressing.

Three color blocking outfits

Pink and red. Ribbed knit sweater in pink, plus the windbreaker jacket in red, light jeans and white shoes. Two colors that sit close together on the color wheel, and the jeans are the pause.

Yellow and lilac. Basic top in yellow, the muslin blouse in lilac over it, plus white pants and light shoes. Two opposite colors in soft shades, with white in between.

Green and pink. Relaxed pants in sage, knit sweater in pink and shoes in beige or white. The muted green keeps the strong pink in balance.
