Autumn Colors in Outfits: Which Colors to Wear in Fall

Fall colors are warm, earthy and deep shades such as mustard, rust, burgundy, olive green, brown, camel, cream, navy and charcoal. In an outfit, two to three of these colors are enough: one as the main color, one as the accent.

When the days get shorter, many people reach for the same dark pieces. Fall colors mix well once you know which shade goes with which. The post shows the palette color by color, each with one or two combinations, plus four outfits to copy. How to layer the pieces is explained in the guide Fall outfits for women.

Which colors are fall colors?

Fall colors recall leaves, earth, wine and moss. The shades are more muted than summer colors and usually have a warm undertone. For orientation, they can be sorted into four groups:

  • Earthy base. Brown, camel, olive green and khaki.
  • Light base. Cream and beige.
  • Deep shades. Burgundy, navy and charcoal.
  • Warm accents. Mustard and rust.

Which of these shades are seen most often this season is covered in the guide Trend colors 2026. Which colors belong to your own color type is answered in the guide Autumn color type colors. This guide is about the palette and how it comes together in an outfit.

How do I combine fall colors in an outfit?

A simple rule of thumb: two to three colors per outfit.

  • One main color. It covers the largest area, for example pants, skirt or jacket.
  • One accent. A second color sits in a single piece, such as a sweater or a scarf.
  • A calm base. Cream, beige or denim blue hold both colors together.

Warm shades go especially well together, because brown, camel, rust and olive green share the same warm undertone. A deep shade such as navy or burgundy adds more tension.

Brown, camel and cream: the calm base for fall

Brown. Brown is the basic color of fall and mixes with almost all other fall colors. Brown with cream is light and calm, brown with navy has a clearer contrast. The basic sweater in brown goes well with light jeans, for example. More on this in the guide Which color goes with brown.

Camel. Camel is the lighter, softer version of brown. An oversize cardigan in camel goes with cream and white, with jeans and with burgundy. Camel with brown makes a warm tone-on-tone look when you mix different knit textures. More on this in the guide Which color goes with camel.

Cream and beige. The light shades bring light into dark fall colors. A cream top under burgundy or olive green brightens the outfit, and beige pants connect brown and camel.

How to combine burgundy in fall

Burgundy is a deep wine red and can be used almost like a neutral. Two simple combinations:

  • Burgundy and gray. The light sweater in burgundy looks calm and clear with gray pants.
  • Burgundy and camel. With camel or cream the look becomes warmer and softer.

You can find more pieces in this shade in the burgundy clothing collection.

How to combine olive green and khaki in fall

Olive green and khaki are earthy greens that behave much like a neutral. Both go with brown, cream and black.

  • Khaki and cream. Light and calm, for example the cargo pants in khaki with a cream sweater.
  • Khaki and brown. Earthy and tone on tone, with brown boots or a brown belt.

Pieces in these shades are available in the khaki clothing collection.

Mustard and rust: the warm accent colors

Mustard and rust are strong and need calm partners. The color works best in a single piece, such as a sweater, a skirt or a scarf.

  • Mustard. Goes with navy, brown, cream and charcoal.
  • Rust. Goes with cream, brown and navy. Rust and navy complement each other, because orange tones and blue are opposites on the color wheel.

The knit skirt in rust needs a simple top, for example in cream or white, so that the openwork knit stays in the center. More skirts in knit are available in the knit skirts collection.

Navy and charcoal: the cool shades in fall

Navy and charcoal form a calm counterpart to brown and rust. They make the warm palette clearer. More on this in the guide Which color goes with navy blue.

  • Navy. Goes with camel, cream and rust. The check jacket in navy blue is worn open over a white top and light jeans.
  • Charcoal. Goes with burgundy, mustard and cream. Charcoal pants are the calm base on which a sweater in burgundy or mustard stands out.
