How to Declutter and Organize Your Closet: Step by Step

The best way to declutter your closet is one category at a time: you take out all the pieces of a group, sort them into Keep, Go and Maybe, and put back only what you really wear. Then you organize the closet by category or color so you can find everything at a glance.

A full closet and still the feeling of having nothing to wear: many people know this. Usually it comes from too many pieces that do not go together or that you never put on. This guide takes you through decluttering step by step and ends with a checklist to tick off.

How to declutter your closet: step by step

You do not have to do everything in one day. It is better to plan two or three short rounds, each for one category. That keeps it manageable. These four steps are enough to start:

  • Choose a category. Start with the one that is easiest for you, for example tops or knitwear. Pants, dresses and jackets follow later.
  • Take everything out. Lay the pieces on the bed. Only when you see everything at once do you notice what you have twice.
  • Sort into three piles. Keep, Go and Maybe. Take only a few seconds per piece.
  • Put things back right away. The Keep pile goes back into the closet. The Go pile goes straight into a bag or a box.

The Maybe pile gets a box with a date. If you have not missed a piece after a few weeks, it can go.

Which questions help you decide?

Instead of brooding for long, three simple questions per piece help:

  • Do you like wearing it? A piece you put on reluctantly every time stays unused in the closet, too.
  • Have you worn it in the last year? This is a common rule of thumb. You may make exceptions, for example for a piece you wear rarely but gladly.
  • Can you combine it with at least three other pieces? Pieces that go with nothing mostly stay on the hanger.

Your answers decide the pile. Three times yes means Keep. Twice no means Go. Everything in between is a Maybe.

What happens to the pieces you sort out?

Close the bag on the same day and put it by the door so it does not end up back in the closet. You can pass sorted-out clothes on to friends, swap them, donate them or resell them. Plan this step right away, otherwise the bag stays in the hallway for weeks.

Spot your favorite pieces and find gaps

After decluttering you see at a glance what stays. Take a closer look at these pieces: which colors appear often? Which cuts do you wear again and again? These are hints about your style. If you are still looking for it, you will find ideas in the guide Which style suits me.

Then comes the gap list. Note what you are missing so that your pieces make more outfits, for example a blouse for a pair of pants that so far hangs alone in the closet. Write the list down instead of buying something on impulse. The guide Capsule wardrobe for women explains which basics carry a small wardrobe. Which colors go well together is explained in the guide Color combinations in clothing.

Organizing your closet: by category or by color?

Both work. What matters is that you keep the order up in daily life. You can try these variants:

  • By category. Tops, pants, dresses, knitwear and jackets each get their own place. This is the simplest order and easy to extend.
  • By color. Within each category you sort from light to dark. This way you quickly see what goes together.
  • By frequency. What you wear often hangs at eye level. Rarer pieces move up or down.
  • By outfit. Pieces you like to wear together hang side by side. This way you pull out an outfit in the morning almost without thinking.

A little space between the pieces makes the closet easier to read.

Seasonal rotation: pieces for spring, summer, autumn and winter

A short switch twice a year is worth it. Pieces for the coming season move to the front, pieces from the past season go into boxes or onto the top shelf. Transitional pieces such as a cardigan, blouse and light pants stay within reach all year.

The change of season is also a good moment to quickly go through the plan above again. Pieces you hold in your hand while rearranging and no longer like go straight onto the Go pile.

Example: basic pieces that can stay in the closet

To finish, an example of how few pieces can go well together. They all belong to one color family of white, beige and camel and can therefore be worn with each other.

Cardigan in camel. The open oversize cardigan sits over a simple top or a blouse.

Blouse in white. You wear the white muslin blouse with a button placket open over a top or buttoned up. The blouse matches the other pieces in this selection in color.

Pants in beige. The loose pants with an elastic waistband are a calm counterpart to knitwear and blouse. Together with the other two pieces they make a tone-on-tone look.

Second cardigan in beige. The cozy cardigan in beige shows how a second knit piece in the same color family extends the selection.

Checklist: decluttering your closet

  • Empty a category. Lay all pieces of a group on the bed.
  • Sort. Keep, Go, Maybe.
  • Put back. Only the Keep pile goes back into the closet.
  • Note the gaps. What is missing so that your pieces make more outfits?
