The French tuck is a quick trick. Tuck the sweater into the waistband a little at the front center and let the sides and back fall loosely over it.

About a hand's width of fabric is enough. Then stretch your arms up once, and just enough slips back out for a soft transition.

Your legs shouldn't be completely covered. If the top ends at thigh level, the look quickly feels heavy.
