Smart Casual for Women: Meaning, Outfits and What Goes With It

Smart casual means: dressed tidily, but not strictly. You wear pieces with some structure, for example tailored trousers, a blouse or fine knitwear, and leave out the suit and the formal strictness.

“Dress code: smart casual” often appears in invitations, job adverts or company rules, with no further explanation. This guide tells you what is meant, which clothes fit and which do not. It also gives four outfits for everyday, the office and a dinner.

What does smart casual mean?

Smart casual is a middle path. “Smart” stands for tidy and thought through, “casual” for relaxed and comfortable. The result is an outfit you can wear at the office, at dinner with friends or at an appointment without being too formal. You will come across the dress code, for example, in relaxed offices, at client meetings in an easy-going setting or on a restaurant visit.

There is no fixed rule. Every company and every host understands the term a little differently. As a rule of thumb, at least one piece has structure and everything else is clean and intact.

Smart casual, casual chic and business casual: the difference

Casual chic is more relaxed and builds on basics such as jeans and a cardigan, more on this in the guide Casual Chic for Women. Business casual is closer to the office and is often more reserved about jeans, more on this in the guide Business Casual for Women. Smart casual sits in between. The dress code overview shows all levels at a glance.

What goes with smart casual?

These pieces are typical and combine well:

  • Tailored trousers. Black, taupe, khaki or brown.
  • Skirt. Knee-length or long, plain or with a subtle pattern.
  • Blouse. Plain, worn open or buttoned.
  • Fine jumper or cardigan. Smooth knits in calm colours.
  • Blazer or short jacket. Gives the outfit structure, but is not a must.
  • Dark, plain jeans. Often accepted if the rest of the outfit stays tidy.

Trousers in khaki, for example the Jersey Stoffhose, are a base that can be combined with a blouse or a jumper.

What does not go with smart casual?

These pieces are usually too casual or too sporty:

  • Joggers and sports leggings. These pieces belong to casual.
  • Heavily ripped or heavily faded jeans. That takes the structure out of the outfit.
  • Tops with a large print. A plain top is the safer choice.
  • Flip-flops and sports shoes. Loafers, ankle boots or ballet flats suit better.

Four smart casual outfits for everyday, the office and dinner

Outfit 1: everyday. Trousers in khaki, a black muslin blouse and brown boots. You wear the blouse buttoned or open over a top. The boots with a zip keep the look down to earth. The outfit works on an ordinary working day as well as at the weekend.

Outfit 2: office. Dark jeans or tailored trousers, a white blouse and a light cardigan in black. Add loafers or ballet flats. The cardigan is easy to put on and take off in the office.

Outfit 3: dinner. Pleated trousers in black, a plain top in white or cream and ankle boots. The pleated trousers are the special piece, the top stays calm.

Outfit 4: skirt. A knee-length skirt, a fine jumper in beige or brown and boots or ankle boots. If you like, add tights in a calm colour. The skirt is the piece with structure here, and the jumper stays plain.

Smart casual colours: calm and muted

Most smart casual outfits stick to muted colours. Black, white, cream, taupe, khaki, brown, grey and navy mix well. A single piece in a stronger colour, such as a cardigan or a scarf, adds variety. Patterns such as fine stripes are possible as long as they stay the exception.

Which shoes go with smart casual?

Loafers, ballet flats, ankle boots and boots are the usual companions. Plain trainers in white or black often work in relaxed settings, while closed shoes are the safer choice when the rules are stricter. You will find more ideas for dressier looks in the guides Chic Outfit for Women and, for the office side, Business Outfit for Women.
