Oversize Leopard Zip Cardigan – Taupe

A leopard print copies the coat markings of a leopard: irregular dark spots on a lighter ground. In fashion it has been its own category for decades and is used like a colour rather than a seasonal graphic. Depending on the base tone it reads either understated or bold.

Leopard is one of the few patterns that barely goes out of fashion, because it behaves like a neutral. Muted versions are more wearable every day than strong contrasts and fit more easily into an existing wardrobe. A knitted piece with a leopard print therefore lasts across several seasons.

Easiest with plain pieces in one of the pattern colours, because those are already in the print and therefore look coordinated. Jeans and a simple top are enough as a base. A second pattern next to it quickly becomes busy, so the rest of the outfit is better kept calm.

It turns one knitted piece into two looks: worn open it feels casual and shows the top underneath, closed it replaces a jumper. Half open it creates a V at the neckline. Unlike buttons, the opening can be adjusted steplessly.

A cardigan is the lighter layer for cool transitional days. Indoors you can keep it on without getting too warm, outdoors it warms you on mild days on its own and otherwise under a jacket. For rain and wind a proper jacket remains the better choice.

Taupe sits between brown and grey and therefore works with both colour families. Cream, beige and camel create a warm tone on tone look, while denim and white add a fresh contrast. Black works too, but reads stricter.
